Michael K. Stein

September 14, 1933 — March 20, 2016

Michael Kay Stein was the only child of Julia and Milton Stein. He was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated in 1957 from the US Military Academy at West Point, NY, and was commissioned as an officer in the US Army. For most of his army career, he was an intelligence officer specialized in Russian affairs. The family lived for most of his career in Europe. After his retirement from the Army in 1977, as lieutenant colonel, he and the family settled in Boulder, Colorado. After the Army he went into the financial world and became a certified Financial Planner. In 1981, he started his own financial planning firm, Financial Planning and Management, and affiliated himself as a regional director with Financial Network Corporation, a broker/dealer. In addition to his personal financial planning practice, he supervised financial planning in five states. In 1996, he sold his business interests and retired to write a book on retirement. The book, The Prosperous Retirement, was published in 1998 and for five years he did lectures around the county on his model of retirement. He served on the boards of the National Endowment for Financial Education and on the boards of other organizations. After his third retirement in 2003, he worked with a number of charitable and community organizations in the Boulder area including the Sutherland Foundation, the Boulder County Youth Corps and Trout Unlimited. In 2010 he and Eunice moved to Highlands Ranch, Colorado to live in a retirement community. He Leaves his wife, Eunice, his daughter, Katharine, his son, Douglas, and six grandchildren: Cydney Stein, Claire Stein, Nicole Honnen, Matthew Honnen, Julia Honnen and Samuel Michael Stein. He was preceded in death by his son Neil. Contributions may be made to the Sutherland Foundation or the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI).
