A Renaissance Woman
Mitzi, was born December 21, 1919 in Pueblo, Colorado. Her parents, Ed & Edith Schmitt along with her 3 sisters, Eleanor, Dorothy & Alice lived in Pueblo until 1933 when they moved to Cañon City and attended St. Scholastica Academy. After graduation she attended Benedictine College in Kansas. After a short stay in Santa Rosa, CA, Mitzi returned to Denver where was employed by Silver Engineering Works. It was there that she met John McCallin and was married 18 months later. The idyllic marriage lasted 62 years until John's death in 2006.
Mitzi had a passion for teaching and taught for 15 years at St. Louis Elementary School. Volunteering was a great part of her life. She was very active in Great Books (50yrs), Denver Botanic Gardens and Betty Ford Gardens in Vail. She will forever be remembered as a fundraiser for Little Sisters of the Poor, where she chaired the annual Holiday Boutique.
Travel was an important part of her life which she incorporated into her painting. She seemed to have a natural ability as well as a passion for painting. In her later life, she and John wintered at their home in Scottsdale. They enjoyed their group of winter friends from St. Patrick's Parish. Mitzi was known to this group for putting on the best St. Patrick's Day party every year.
She is survived by her children Kathleen (John) Gross, Daniel (Eileen) McCallin, Brian (Debra) McCallin, adopted daughter Sandy Jonasson, 9 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Little Sisters of the Poor, 3629 W. 29th Ave. Denver 80211.
