Muriel Jane Burns

July 20, 1937 — December 24, 2024

Denver, CO

Muriel Jane Burns, a beloved resident of Denver, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2024, at the age of 87. Known as Jane to most, she was a true Colorado native, born on July 20, 1937, in Denver to Marcellus and Amy Felker. Jane grew up in Denver’s West Highlands neighborhood and graduated from North High School in 1954. Her childhood was filled with cherished memories, including fishing trips in the mountains with her father and cross-country road trips with her family to explore the 48 contiguous states and Alaska.

After attending Western State College in Gunnison, Colorado, Jane married her one true love, Robert Burns, in 1956, while Robert served in the Navy in Virginia Beach, VA. The couple moved frequently for Robert’s career, eventually settling in Arlington, VA, where they began their family. Later, they returned to Colorado, where they welcomed three more children into their lives.

Jane’s unwavering devotion to her family was evident throughout her life. She created a warm and nurturing home and was a constant presence, offering love, patience, and understanding. A woman of strong faith, Jane was active in her local Catholic parish for many years. As her children grew older, she reentered the workforce, first with the Colorado Division of Wildlife and later with Colorado State Parks, where she enjoyed a 30-year career, retiring in 2013. She cherished her time with State Parks, proud of her accomplishments and the lifelong friendships she formed with coworkers.

In retirement, Jane loved traveling with her husband and family, with frequent trips to the Canadian Maritime Provinces among her favorite memories. An avid reader, she delighted in spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. A passionate and vocal supporter at their lacrosse and hockey games, Jane was always eager to cheer on her growing family. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were her greatest joy.

Jane was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Robert Burns, and her infant son, Robert Patrick Burns. She is survived by her children: Terence Burns, Bridget Sherrod (Sammy), Hilary Burns-Tayloe (Mike), and Cathleen Burns-Grasso (Tom). Her grandchildren: Maylene, Elizabeth, Hailey, Alex, Dalton, Joseph, Sam, John, Michael, and Luke. Her great-grandchildren: Milo, Vivian, and Kai.

A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, Jane’s love and legacy of compassion, patience, and selflessness will live on in the hearts of her family and friends. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
