Myrtle Daphne Chong passed away peacefully during the twilight hours of Monday, April 13, 2020, a few weeks beyond her 92nd birthday. She leaves behind a large family who loved her dearly including: son, Raymond Lawrence and wife Freda, Grandchildren: Taylor, Jessica, Ray Jr. ,Great-Grandchildren: London & King; sisters: Monica Chong-Hunter & Yvonne Attia Chong; many nieces and nephews: Chun Moi & Family, Noel Chang and family, Yvonne Chin & family, Bryan Hunter & Family; Julanne Hunter, Cheryl Chong-Hunter, Timothy Attia & Family, Kirk Hunter, and beloved grandniece Marje Chang.
Myrtle was the third child of Joseph Chong (Chong Gon), an immigrant from China to Jamaica, WI. in 1910, and his wife, Jane Northover, daughter of a Scot-Irish Planter & a mother who was a powerful Jamaican folk medicine healer. Myrtle was a devoted child of God and in all ways endeavored to acknowledge Him. She made everyone around her feel special and loved. From her early years she grew up working in her parents' Chinese grocery & haberdashery store In Jamaica WI. Her devotion and aptitude for business made her an indispensable asset. She worked as a shopkeeper and caretaker for her family for most of her life. She lived for many years in Golden Grove, Jamaica with her brother-in-law, Luther Chang and helped raise his children and grandchildren. In the year 2000, Myrtle emigrated from Jamaica to the US to join her mother Jane and sister Monica in Arvada, CO. She spent many happy hours joining in social activities through the Arvada Senior Center, including outings, luncheons, concerts and theater productions. She loved music and even as she developed dementia she could still recall her favorite, hymns, show tunes and songs from her childhood.
In March of 2018, when she learned that her long lost son had been found, she spontaneously began to sing the refrain from ""Some Enchanted Evening"" - ""Once you've found him, never let him go, Once you have found him Never let him go.. . .""
We will never let go of the memory of our beloved Myrtle, precious child of God and beautiful spirit who graced our world.
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea. â 14. Psalm 46:1-2
