Nancy Walters Morrison

Nancy Walters Morrison, 88, died Saturday, January 10, 2015 at her home in Parker, Colorado. She was born in Marion, Kansas on March 12, 1926. The love of her life, Joseph Morrison, fell in love with her as she was singing Mozart's Alleluia in Ellsworth, Kansas where they both lived. Nancy's life dream was to attend a conservatory of music. Her dream was fulfilled when she graduated from the Peabody Conservatory of The Johns Hopkins University while Joseph was a midshipman at the United State Naval Academy. They were married at the Naval Academy Chapel on graduation day, June 3, 1949. She spent her musical career singing opera and musicals, but was primarily a soprano soloist of sacred music at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Dayton, Ohio, and at First Presbyterian Church in Shreveport, Louisiana. Music was the sustenance of her life. Her experiences of climbing the mountains of Colorado and reaching their peaks brought her joy beyond words. In the last twenty years of her life, Celtic spirituality became a vital component of her deep Christian faith. Nancy was proud of her long membership in the P.E.O. Sisterhood, which connected her with family members in prior and current generations over a span of many years and residences in several states. Her most recent church home was Wellshire Presbyterian in Denver. She is preceded in death by her parents Mildred Oliver Walters and Robert Kingsley Walters, her husband Joseph Richard Morrison, and her sister Virginia Walters Walker. She is survived by her brother Robert Kingsley Walters, Jr. of Yuma, Arizona; her three children: David Morrison of Parker, Colorado; Patricia Kitchen and her husband James of Pocono Lake, Pennsylvania; and Thomas Morrison and his wife Susi of Parker, Colorado. Her children were the light of her life. They each made her proud, and blessed to be a mother. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Crawford Brubaker and his wife Layne, Ben Brubaker and his wife Alyssa, all of New Orleans, Elisabeth Brubaker of New York City, Megan Morrison of Colorado Springs, and Kate Morrison of Parker, as well as her beloved nieces and nephews: Lynne Walker of Seattle and Jane, Mike and Jim Walters of Yuma, AZ. A service to celebrate her faith, compassion and the sacred music that defined her life will be held at Wellshire Presbyterian Church in Denver, Colorado on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at 1 p.m..
