Those are the facts … for the historical record. They serve only as a crisp summation to Nonie’s story.
Nonie began her tale as the youngest of seven children, feisty in disposition and independent in nature. She married Doug at the tender age of 16 and together they wrote chapters of adventure, challenge, triumph and all that it takes to raise a family and sustain 53 years of marriage. Her faith, independence and loyalty carried her through life’s ups and downs. Her heart and wisdom supported her ability to reach out and lift the spirits of those around her.
Nonie was a longtime member of the Intercession Episcopal Church where she was deeply involved in the work of the church and service to those less fortunate, and always an unfiltered critic to injustice. She was a dedicated homemaker while the kids were young, but later worked as a baker for the neighborhood elementary school. After the last kid flew the coup, she worked as an accountant for a variety of businesses, including May D&F, Shamrock Foods and Rocky Mountain Records Management. Pledged in as a member of the Torch Bearer Kappa Chapter of the Beta Sigma Phi International women’s sorority in 1975, she achieved a lifetime membership where she built lifelong relationships with women who shared the same heart to encourage one another and to help others. Nonie believed in keeping active, as those who knew her knew all too well. Always up for an adventure, she loved road trips with family and a few close friends, whether traveling abroad or wandering the backroads of this great land. She enjoyed playing cards each week with the “card club girls”, attending the theater, shopping and “junking” every chance she got. And she loved conversing with others over coffee.
Above all else, Naomi cherished her family, her friends and everything life had to offer. She answered to a variety of nicknames - “Beautiful Chicken”, “Nonie Sue”, “Mom”, “Meme”, and most often just “Nonie”. But … the shoes she wore, the shoes that can never be filled, were that of a lifetime partner, a dedicated mother, a grandmother and great-grandmother who worshiped her “babies” and the best friend anyone could ask for. She was the rock and the foundation we all needed and loved.
Between the facts of birth and dying is the “Story of Nonie”. And as stories go, each word shared becomes a part of her story, living in us and beyond us.
Nonie’s life will be celebrated on September 30, 2023 at 10:00 am at Intercession Episcopal Church, 3101 E 100th Ave, Thornton, CO. 80229.
