Nicholas F. Frazer

September 2, 1951 — September 21, 2015

Nick Frazer was born and raised in Columbus, Nebraska, graduating from Columbus High School in 1969. After studying briefly at University of Nebraska Lincoln, Nick followed his older brother and sister to Colorado where he enrolled in Colorado State University. He graduated from CSU in 1974 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in technical journalism. It was DJ-ing and reading the news at the student station that gave Nick the first taste of his true calling: broadcasting Nick's first paying gig in media was at the Boulder radio station KADE. When the station moved to the FM dial as KBCO, Nick became one of the station's first DJs. Public television offered Nick his next challenge when he joined the founding staff of KBDI Channel 12 as program manager. In his spare time, Nick produced and hosted Homemovies, a showcase for local amateur filmmakers and live comedy skits. He was also a producer and VJ on Teletunes, a music video show that pre-dated MTV, and a frequent host on fundraising drives. Nick's career in Public Television took him next to Washington state, where he programmed KWSU and KTNW and contributed his editing, voice and on-air talents to promotion and fundraising efforts. Once a week, Nick crossed the border into Idaho to play rock and roll on KUOI, the University of Idaho student station. In 1996, WLIW Channel 21 on Long Island, New York, hired Nick as program manager. During his eight years with the station, he introduced the Teletubbies to America and was the national coordinator for BBC World News. However, many young co-workers best remember Nick for giving them their start in public broadcasting. Nick left public television in 2004 to return to Colorado to be close to his family. Taking a payroll position with the City and County of Denver gave Nick the chance to explore his love of singing. He joined the One World Singers community chorus (formerly the Turnverein Chorus) where he sang bass for eight years. Through his connection with the chorus, Nick appeared in a choral ensemble at Carnegie Hall performing Beethoven, Mass in C in 2010. Nick's other passions included movies, animals, photography and travel. With his wife Kevon, he visited the British Isles, France, Italy, Mexico and Turkey. The wide-eyed kid from Nebraska could never quite get over his good fortune at seeing so much of the world. Nick is survived by his wife, Kevon Storie; sister, Jane Ferris; nieces, Loni Floreth, Rebecca Ferris, Mackenzie Wilson, Devon Floreth and Fallin Smith; nephews, Joe, Tristan and Gavin Floreth, Jack Roberts and Brenden Storie; and many dear friends who will remember him for his kindness, dedication, warmth and dry humor. A Celebration of Nick's Life will be held Saturday, October 10, 2015, 3:30 PM at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 2201 Dexter Street, Denver, Colorado.
