Nicholas V. Tsiouvaras, 91, entered peacefully into eternal life on November 10, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.
Nicholas was born in Elassona, Greece, on July 6, 1932, to Vasilios N. and Theodora (Nitse) Tsiouvaras. His young life was largely shaped by experiences he had during World War II as the son of an exiled mayor trying to stay ahead of the Italian and German forces. Nicholas shared many stories of the atrocities of war that he witnessed.
After the war, Nicholas’ father sent him to the United States to earn a Civil Engineering degree with the hope of rebuilding Greece. Nicholas arrived at the age of 18, armed only with a Greek-to-English dictionary.
Nicholas graduated with honors from the University of Wyoming in 1955 with a degree in Civil Engineering. While there, Nicholas differentiated himself with his problem-solving abilities and mathematical mind and was selected as the outstanding graduate of the entire College of Engineering.
Nicholas was a principal at KKBNA Consulting Engineers, Denver, Colorado until 1973. While at KKBNA, Nicholas served as Principal Engineer for the TWA 747 Overhaul Facility in Kansas City. The project won the coveted National Grand Conceptor Award for Engineering Excellence in 1973. The Grand Conceptor Award signifies the year’s most outstanding engineering achievement. Nicholas also designed many of the original high-rise structures in downtown Denver.
In 1974, Nicholas formed N.V. Tsiouvaras and Associates, Consulting Engineers, to serve the practice of structural engineering, designing many projects around Colorado and Wyoming.
Nicholas was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife, Christine H. (Kapeles) Tsiouvaras, sister Anna (Tsiouvaras) Hristopulos, and brother, John V. Tsiouvaras.
He is survived by his children: Theodora (Larry) Thompson, Bill (Ann), John (Sophia), and George (Nicole); his beloved grandchildren: Nicholas W. (Anna), Laura, Elizabeth, Samantha, Frank, Nicholas G., Eleni, and Athena; and by his brother, George V. (Baia) Tsiouvaras, Elassona, Greece; and by cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Nicholas instilled in his family a tremendous appreciation for our Greek heritage and Orthodox faith. His love of life, commitment to family, indomitable spirit, amazing optimism, and pride in being an American set a tremendous standard of conduct for our family. His love will endure in our hearts and souls eternally.
Those wishing to honor Nicholas may make memorial contributions to Saints Peter & Paul Greek Orthodox Church, 5640 Jay Road, Boulder, CO 80301, www.stspeterandpaulboulder.org.
