Norbert Eugene Simpson

February 7, 1927 — March 5, 2020

Norbert Eugene Simpson, age 93, died in his home March 5, 2020, due to natural causes.

Born in 1927 in Denver, Colorado, Norbert lived in the Denver area through most of his life and worked as a general contractor and business owner.

As a young man, Norbert longed to serve his country and strongly desired to follow his older brothers to serve in WWII. At the age of 16, Norbert tried to join all three branches of the armed forces and was denied due to his age. He found that the Merchant Marines would accept him, so he served in the Pacific as a cook on a Merchant Marine ship, the S.S. John Deere. Upon his return to Denver after the war, he partnered with his brother Harold to build a house. That initial endeavor led to Norbert's long and successful career as a general contractor for construction of houses, apartments, and office buildings throughout the Denver metro area and in other states in the Southwest. His love for building was surpassed only by his love for his late wife, Darleen Simpson. Prior to Darleen's passing in 2017, Norbert and Darleen were married for 60 years. Norbert and Darleen were proud and thankful for their three children: Daryl, Diane, and Dale, all of whom preceded them in death.

Norbert was known for his fierce determination, keen mind, sage wisdom, love of animals, growing faith in God, and abounding generosity.

Survivors include Harold (Virginia) Simpson of California; Gladys Mercier of Arvada; Trevor (Amy) Simpson of Winfield, Illinois; Turner (Angela) Lang of Greenwood Village; Kevin (Diana) Simpson of Parker; Kristi (Bryan) Vogel of Timnath; Ashley (Roy) Sakker of Wheat Ridge; and his great-grandchildren Kenny Bottoms, Cameron Simpson, Rylee Vogel, Emma Simpson, Matthew Vogel, Cayden Lang, Sydney Lang, Scott Vogel, Sophie Sakker, Johannah Vogel, Caleb Sakker, Morgan Vogel, and Jayce Vogel. Norbert was preceded in death by his siblings Mildred, William, Louie, Wayne, and Thomas; his wife, Darleen; and his children, Daryl, Diane, and Dale.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 12, at Horan and McConaty Funeral Home, 11150 East Dartmouth Avenue in Aurora. The interment will follow the memorial service on the Horan and McConaty’s Rocky Mountain Memorial Park. Relatives and friends are welcome to commemorate and celebrate Norbert's life through food and fellowship at Maggiano's Little Italy, 7401 South Clinton Street, Englewood, following the interment.
