Ollie Asbury

December 25, 1932 — May 2, 2015

He was born December 25, 1932 to James P. and Mollie L. Asbury in Gosneyville, KY, which later became encompassed into Campton, KY. He was predeceased by both parents, older brothers - James and Tom and one sister Jean who died when she was four years old due to an accident. Living in the Kentucky hills, the family earned their living by raising tobacco as their main cash crop. They also sold milk, cream, butter, eggs and chickens. They picked blackberries and sold them. The worst part of that job was getting into chiggers. He was good at opossum hunting and sold the pelts. As they always grew a garden, they canned and dried fruits and vegetables. His mother made featherbeds out of down from their ducks. That was what they slept in to keep warm during the winters. After graduating from high school in Dayton, Ohio, he worked for a year at Sheffield Gauge and then joined the Air Force on Nov. 10, 1952. After basic training in San Antonio, Texas, he went to Electronics and Radar System School at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver. Although he was stationed in Duluth, Minnesota, he spent some time at Lowry for advanced schooling every year. It was during this time that he met Rose Letey and they were married November 10, 1956. He worked for Martin-Marietta when it first opened in 1957. After their big layoff in 1965, the family moved to Las Cruces, NM and he worked at NASA White Sands Missile Range. In 1968 he was hired by Honeywell in Littleton, CO. He always enjoyed hunting, fishing, cars, fixing things, gardening and yard work. It seemed like there wasn't anything that he couldn't repair, refinish or refurbish. He was always helping friends and neighbors with lawn mower problems or any other household issue or minor car repairs. After suffering from various health issues, including an autoimmune disease and problems that the doctors could never figure out, he was in a slump. But in later years, he made it his goal to make others happy by telling them stories or jokes. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 1/2 years, Rose Letey Asbury, Daughter Linda Eylander and husband Tom, Daughter Leslie Farley and husband Paul, Son David Asbury and wife Lori. Grandchildren William, Peter and Virginia Farley, Susan and Katie Eylander, And five grand-doggies. Please share your memories of Ollie and condolences with his family at HoranCares.com.
