Paul Gerhard Schmidt III, successful explorer and geologist, passed away peacefully on Feb. 25, in Lakewood, Colorado. Paul began his career with expeditions to Antarctica, where he has a glacier named after him. He is credited with discovering major ore deposits across the United States. He was an outdoors man and hunter, and enjoyed the beauty of nature. Paul was also very active with Habitat for Humanity and the Lutheran Church of the Cross in Evergreen, Colorado. Paul was born on Augut 6, 1934, in Granite Falls, MN. He is survived by his loving wife Mary Ann, in Evergreen, CO, brother John (Molly) Schmidt in Litchfield, MN, and sister Susan (Jon) Nymo in Cable, WI; daughters Maja Haloway and Melaura (Dan) Schmidt Duncan; son Paul (Julaine) G. Schmidt IV, 6 grandchildren, Daniel Albers, Benjamin Albers, Walter (Kelli) Duncan, Astri Duncan, Paul G. Schmidt V, Ryan Schmidt and great-granddaughter Sofi Jean Duncan. Visitation will take place Thursday, February 28, from 1:00 to 2:00 pm with a Funeral Service to follow at 2:00 pm at Lutheran Church of the Cross, 28253 Meadow Dr., Evergreen. Reception to follow the service. A Memorial Service and burial will take place in Granite Falls, MN at a later date.
