Pauline McGhghy

April 23, 1920 — March 3, 2016

Pauline Weitzel was born on April 23, 1920 in Loveland, Colorado to Emma (Blum) and Conrad Weitzel. She was the third of six children. The family lived and farmed just outside of the Loveland city limits. She attended and graduated from Loveland high school. Following graduation she moved to Denver where she met and fell in love with Selva ""Mac"" McGhghy. They married in Golden, Colorado on Septmber 30, 1942. Mac was serving in the Army Air Corp as a medic. The Air Corp shipped them off to Georgia for a while where Pauline remarked that she didn't like the heat and humidity. After a stay down there, they came back to Colorado to start their family. Leroy arrived February 6th, 1944. Frank came 19 months later on September 17th, 1945. They must have rested for a while because Virginia did not arrive until September 6th, 1947. Number 4, Dan, was born on August 6th, 1949. Pauline and Mac had to face every parent's nightmare when Virginia came down with Leukemia. She fought long and hard but it was too much for her. She passed away on August 9th, 1951. Tom was born to them on March 9th, 1953, followed by June on February 13th, 1955. Pauline decided enough was enough and the population explosion was over. To help make financial ends meet, Pauline went to work outside the house soon after June started school. She worked retail for King's department store and then went to work for K-Mart until she retired. The kids all attended public schools and graduated from West High School. They were typical neighborhood kids of that age, having a lot of fun and mischief. There was the time they chased Pauline with a garter snake, she climbed up on the incinerator in the backyard and they didn't let her down for sometime. One time, Frank went to pick her up at work and drove his Jeep up on one of the piles of snow in the parking lot. Needless to say, he got stuck up on the top. They had to walk home. According to Frank, it was not a quiet walk. Pauline and Mac had plans for retirement. They purchased a new pickup and camper. They only were able to make a couple of trips when Mac fell ill with cancer. He passed away on July 6th, 1990. The rest of her life was dedicated to her grandchildren. She was a tough and resilient woman. Having outlived four of her children and two of her grandchildren, she never lost her zest for life. She became a devoted sports fan. She talked with her grandchildren about batting averages, home runs, touchdowns, and other statistical data. She lived and died with the Broncos, Rockies, and Nuggets. Her family will remember our Christmas Eve celebrations and birthday parties for her at the White Fence Farm. Her love and kindness and an occasional swear word will be missed.
