Phyllis M. Humiston

August 26, 1933 — July 24, 2024

Highlands Ranch

Phyllis Humiston, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, and sister, passed away peacefully from heart failure in her 91st year of life. She married Wayne, her beloved husband in 1970. They lived in Denver until 1975 when they moved to Acres Green and later Highlands Ranch to be in Douglas County where her dad’s family homesteaded.

Phyllis was born in Denver on August 26, 1933 during the Great Depression and was one of three siblings (Don and Bill McKinster) from parents Mary and Jesse McKinster. She had two other siblings from her father’s two other marriages (Bob and Sharon). Her exceptional loving motherhood provided comfort, food, and wide-open welcoming arms to all that came into her company. Many of our friends called her “mom.”

Phyllis worked well into her 70s, first as a phone operator at Mountain Bell in Denver, later as a checker for Safeway which she spoke of the fondest memories, followed later as a bookkeeper for Bellco Credit Union. After retiring, she volunteered at the Acres Green Elementary for her “Kindies.” She also served on the Alter Guild at her lifelong Episcopal church St. Michael & All Angels'.

Phyllis enjoyed over five decades of adventures with her family at two different cabins in Grand Lake that included her waterskiing until she was 69. Many of her extended family camped at or slept-over at the cabins including times with 13 family members sleeping on every surface in the 400 sq. ft. cabin. Phyllis loved animals and dogs and cats were always a part of her life. Most recently she loved on her precious Yorkie, Ginger.

Phyllis is survived by her daughter Viki (John), son Tim (Lisa) Humiston, grandson Connor, granddaughter Ericka (Mike) Reed, great-grandson Skyler Hewitt, and granddaughter Lisa (JT) Green. Phyllis was pre-deceased by her husband Wayne and her children, Kent, Kevin, and Kimi.

Later in life, especially as her health declined, Phyllis became less social and more private. She asked that her funeral service be limited and include only immediate family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Denver Dumb Friends League or your favorite animal rescue.
