Randy Reeder of Aurora, CO passed away peacefully on July 12, 2022 while hiking in the mountains near Georgetown, CO. He was born in Huntington, W. Virginia on Nov. 3, 1946, but spent his youth in Aurora, CO from 1953 to 1968.
He graduated from Aurora High School in 1965 and earned his B.S. degree in physics from Metropolitan State College of Denver in 1976. He obtained an M.S. degree in physics from the University of Wyoming in 1979 and his Ph.D. in physics from the University of New Mexico in 1985. Prior to completing his undergraduate studies, Randy served on active duty as an electronics technician with the U.S. Air Force from 1968 to 1972.
His professional employment included positions as a graduate teaching assistant in physics and astronomy at the Universities of Wyoming and New Mexico; a post doctoral fellowship in particle physics and computer modeling at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, New Mexico; and a research associate in elementary particle physics at the University of New Mexico, in conjunction with the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility linear accelerator ("LAMPF"). Prior to his retirement he worked as a research assistant in the Aerospace Engineering Dept. of the University of Colorado, Boulder.
In addition to his passion for particle physics, mathematics and science, Randy had many interests, including hiking in the Colorado mountains, gardening, botany (especially mountain wildflowers), paleontology, cosmology, and the Opera.
He was preceded in death by his father, Elmer Vinson Reeder and his mother, Ruth Lowe Reeder of Aurora, CO. He is survived by his brother, Steven Vinson Reeder and sister-in-law, Marsha S. Reeder of Aurora, CO, and numerous cousins and friends.
A visitation will be held on Friday July 29, 2022 3-6pm at Horan and McConaty; 11150 E. Dartmouth Ave. Aurora, CO 80014. Randy will be privately inurned at Fort Logan National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Randy's memory may be made to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, Denver, CO.
