Raymond (Bud) Lee Johnson, 82 years old died peacefully on May 8th to a new life in Heaven after a courageous battle with cancer. He was a graduate of Bertrand High School in Bertrand, Nebraska. He also experienced two years at Luther College. Mr. Johnson also went to a Community College in Colorado to learn about Trucking Law.
Mr. Johnson grew up on the beautiful farming lands of Nebraska. He enjoyed farming but wanted to experience life in a different way by serving in the Army for three years. After his stint in the Army, he moved to California where he sold furnaces. It was in California where he met his wife to be, Joyce. They were married on May 13th, 1967. A move to Colorado proved to be the place they would settle down to raise their family. Once settled, he would work in the trucking business. It was not long before he owned his own company involving moving trucks and machinery. He and his wife volunteered at their church by driving a bus, teaching young children in Sunday school, and helped with the Cherub Choir. They enjoyed their life together for over 53 years.
Ray’s (Bud) greatest accomplishment would be nurturing his children and his grandchildren. (This is what he would say). Camping and spending time with his grandchildren was what brought him joy! While camping he would make his famous “Johnson Special.” His children and grandchildren loved it. The “Johnson Special” is what we now know as a skillet. Eating and then throwing the peanut shells in the campfire was always a highlight. Many trips were taken to other locations such as South Dakota and Disney properties, but it was always about spending time with those he loved and cherished. He was also devoted to his parents while they were still alive.
His hobbies included his love of reading. He would read two books a week! He also enjoyed old western shows and movies. He especially liked John Wayne and Roy Rogers. Meeting Roy Rogers was an experience he cherished. Antiques were another love of his. He would attend auctions to acquire antiques and just enjoy being around furniture that had stories to tell. His love of football included watching the Nebraska Cornhuskers and his beloved Broncos. At one time he owned a beautiful horse named Ginger who he rode with pride. Horses were just another interest.
He is survived by his wife Joyce, their daughter Jacquie of Littleton, Colorado, their son Erik Johnson and his wife Sharon of Highlands Ranch, Colorado. He is also survived by six grandchildren; Jennifer Cupich, Justin Cupich, Ella Johnson, Connor Johnson, Brooklyn Johnson, as well as Keith Erin Hopkins, all who live in Colorado. He is preceded in death by his parents, aunts, sister, and his beloved son Keith.
