Beloved author, editor, and speaker, Rebecca ""Becky"" Merrill Groothuis has passed from this world into the presence of her Lord at the age of sixty-three after a long, arduous struggle with dementia. Mrs. Groothuis wrote two books: Women Caught in the Conflict (1994) and Good News for Women (1997). Both works argued for the equality of women and men in the church, home, and society. She also co-edited an academic volume called Discovering Biblical Equality (2003) as well as publishing many essays, articles, editorials, and reviews.
Mrs. Groothuis, a member of Mensa and Phi Beta Kappa, was known for her high intelligence, incisive wit, classy demeanor, and tireless pursuit of truth. She was also a poet, singer, and pianist. Mrs. Groothuis is the subject of her husband's book, Walking through Twilight: A Wife's Illness -A Philosopher's Lament (2017). She is survived by her husband of thirty-three years, Douglas Groothuis, of Denver, her brother John Merrill, of Boston, her brother Gerald Merrill, of Phoenix, and her devoted dog and intuitive comforter, Sunny. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to Wellspring Anglican Church (Englewood, CO) and/or Christians for Biblical Equality.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, July 14, 2018 at 2:00pm, Wellspring Anglican Church, 4300 S Lincoln St, Englewood, CO 80113.
