Andy was born in 1945 in Columbia, SC, and died at his home in Aurora, CO on April 12, 2012 after courageous battle with cancer at the age of 66. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard J. Sr. and Helen C. (Wennberg) Anderfuren.
Andy was a veteran, having served in the Army Air Artillery in Korea and as a Drill Sergeant at Ft. Bliss, TX from 1966 through 1969. Andy held a Bachelorâs Degree in Accounting from St. Maryâs University, San Antonio, TX and was a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). He began his civilian Federal career in 1973 as an auditor with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), and then worked as an auditor with the Department of Energy (DOE). In 1981 he became an accountant with the Air Force Accounting and Finance Center (AFAFC) which became the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS), Denver Center.
On July 10, 2005, Andy entered the distinguished Senior Executive Service (SES) ranks and was appointed as the Director, Accounting Services â Air Force for DFAS. He was responsible for planning, implementing, monitoring, evaluating and operating of accounting and financial management programs in support of the Air Force and Unified Command customers. Andy was also responsible for overseeing the operation of the DFAS Denver Site as well as five DFAS Field Site organizations throughout the United States. Andy retired in February 2009 as a distinguished member of the Senior Executive Service, Department of Defense.
Andy was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He was a historian of American and world history. He favored books about all the American presidents and especially those of Abraham Lincoln, whom he considered our countryâs greatest President. He was a patriot who dearly loved his country.
Andy is survived by his wife, Ellen (Reichert) of Aurora, CO; his two children, Annita (Larry) McCormick, Plano, TX, and Michael (Jacinda) Anderfuren, Castle Rock, CO; three grandchildren Levi, Charlee and Micah Anderfuren; his stepchildren Michael Joo, Middletown, OH, Jacqueline Joo and Matthew Joo, both of Aurora, CO. He is also survived by two sisters, Lauren Anderfuren, Plano, TX and Nancey (Cliff) Schoepp, Wembley, Canada; his nephews Clinton Schoepp and Clayton (Rhonda) Schoepp, his niece Christina (Rich) Shaw and several great nieces and nephews. Richard is also survived by his Uncle Floyd âSwedeâ (Merel) Wennberg, his Aunt Wilma (Bill) Kunerth, and his Aunt Lois Anderfuren.
A visitation is scheduled for Monday, April 23, 2012 from 4 to 8 p.m., and a Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at 10:30 a.m., both at Horan & McConaty Family Chapel, 11150 E. Dartmouth Ave., Aurora, CO. A military burial with full honors will be held on Tuesday, April 24 at 2:15 p.m. at Ft. Logan National Cemetery, Staging Area C.
