Richard ""Rick"" LeRoy Hahn

September 25, 1946 — January 25, 2015

Rick, (Richard LeRoy), Hahn passed away at his home on January 25, 2015. He was 68 years old. His family and friends will remember his sharp wit and sense of humor, his enjoyment of learning and passion for the outdoors. Rick's passion for learning and the outdoors permeated every aspect of his life. Born in Des Moines, Iowa, September 25, 1946, Rick's journey to Colorado was one of calculation to see something new. He earned his Bachelor's degree from Iowa State University in 1968 and served in Vietnam in the Army from 1969 to 1970. He returned to school to study pharmacy at the University of Iowa where he earned bachelors and masters degrees (1976 and 1979). He earned his second masters degree, an MBA, from the University of Phoenix in 1991. Rick met Susan Gentry while working at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City. After agreeing to move to Colorado, they married on June 7, 1986. Throughout their 29 years of marriage, they shared a love of the outdoors, and spent much time together camping, scuba diving, skiing and hiking. Over the years they enjoyed traveling to visit extended family and even joined their daughter, Sarah, in Spain when she was studying abroad. Rick had a keen intellect with an incredible knowledge-base on multiple and seemingly unrelated topics. During any given conversation he could debate politics abroad, health care financing, the best gear for rock climbing, the Broncos football team or the right tire pressure for your car. Rick enjoyed learning new skills and changed hobbies over the years. A common theme for Rick's passions was spending the time outdoors and with his family. Rick climbed all 54 of Colorado's ""fourteeners"", the mountains over 14, 000 feet high. He achieved many of these climbs with Susan and his children. He mastered other peaks around the world such as Mount Kilimanjaro (Tanzania), Meru (Tanzania), and Elbrus (Russia). In the winter, Rick enjoyed downhill skiing. To this end he joined a masters racing team to share more time on the mountain when Stephen and Sarah were racing. In fact, the family enjoyed skiing together at Telluride over the recent Christmas holidays. Rick spent his pharmacy career in hospitals in different capacities from staff to director. Rick retired from the Multum Information Services as a Research Associate. For a time, Rick's active lifestyle was slowed by idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. A double lung transplant in 2013 gave him a much appreciated gift of life. It is a testament to Rick's active mind and unending optimism that he was newly signed up for a welding class. Rick is survived by his wife, Susan (Gentry) Hahn of Centennial, children Sarah and Stephen; brother, Kenneth Hahn of Mesa, Arizona; Rick is predeceased by his parents Helen Parsons and LeRoy (Jack) Hahn. A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, February 14, 2015, 1:00 pm, at Wellshire Presbyterian Church. Internment of his ashes at the church's memorial garden will occur before the ceremony. Please consider donations to the Donor Alliance or the church. Please share your memories of Rick and condolences with his family by signing the guestbook below.
