Richard John Liby

July 13, 1968 — April 23, 2009

Rick Liby, 40, unexpectedly died in his sleep on April 23, 2009. A Concordia, Kansas native, Rick graduated Magna Cum Laude from Southwestern College in 1990, before receiving his J.D. from KU in 1993. He practiced law briefly in Texas, then returned to Kansas where he spent 12 years practicing worker's compensation law at Wichita firm, McDonald, Tinker, Skaer, Quinn & Herrington. In 2005, he married his long-time friend Shari Willis - on his snowboard - on the Lost Boy run at Vail. The two moved to Denver in 2006 to enjoy more of the wonders of Colorado. There, Rick joined the firm of Ruegsegger Simons Smith & Stern, where he worked until the time of his death. To know Rick was to love Rick: kind, considerate and exceedingly thoughtful; always eager to lend a hand, extend a word of congratulations or pick up the bar tab; one of the most engaging story-tellers you could ever meet; the first person to welcome a newcomer into his circle of friends. A lover of the outdoors, Rick participated in multiple road races, marathons, bike races, snowboarding excursions, and traveled extensively. Rick was blessed with a wonderful, successful and respected life, and lived it to the fullest. Rick is survived by his wife, Shari Willis Liby; his children Jordan and Laken Willis; his parents, Jerry and Carla Liby and Brian and Debbie Hammond; his sister, Jennifer Mackey, brother-in-law, Carl Mackey, nephew, Brennen Acree, niece, Haidyn Mackey; and countless friends. He will be deeply missed by those who loved him and those who were fortunate enough to have known him. Memorial Service to be held Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at 1PM at Horan & McConaty, 1091 S. Colorado Blvd. Memorial Service, Friday, May 1, 10AM, Church of the Magdalen 12626 E. 21st Street North, Wichita, KS. Memorials may be made in Rick's name to Challenge Aspen P.O. Box 6639 Snowmass Village, CO 81615.
