Rita Diessner Custy was born to Lena Wagner and John Diessner, March 18, 1925 in Columbus, Nebraska, near Spaulding. She spent her early years on her father's farm in Spaulding before the family moved to Kit Carson Colorado where her mother had homesteaded. Her mother, as a teacher, instilled Rita's love for education and learning. Rita attended grade school in boarding schools in Clyde and Nevada, Missouri but returned to graduate from Cheyenne Wells High School. She moved to Denver to attend Barnes School of Business. She married Kenneth Custy on November 11, 1947 in the same chapel at Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Denver where her parents were married.
Rita kept the books for her husband's farming business northeast of Aurora for 57 years until his death in 2004. She also applied her bookkeeping skills to her work at the Air Force Accounting and Finance Center for a number of years.
Rita was an expert seamstress, loved to travel and enjoyed reading and watching the birds who flocked to her birdfeeder.
Rita lost her mother at age eight. As the oldest she was a strong support for her father as he raised her brother and sister. Because she had lost her mother so early she was committed to be the best mother to her own children. Her nieces and nephews have fond memories of her loving care and the fun times on the farm. She simply gave of herself. Rita had an eye for people who needed love and kindness and a listening ear. She strongly felt that love was something that only increases the more you love.
Rita was preceded in death by husband Kenneth, her sister Agnes Burnett and her brother Clem Diessner. She is survived by her children: Judy Custy, Lorie Graber (Glenn), Kenneth J Custy (Carol) , John Custy and eight grandchildren: Nicole Graber, Patrick Graber, Brandon Custy, Kailin Isaacson (Andrew) ,Sean Custy, John N Custy, Jennifer Custy, Soila Loeza and one great grandson, her greatest joy, Jimmy Custy. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law Helen Konrad, Rita Mulligan, and Donna Warren (Jim) and many nieces and nephews.
Her family would like to especially thank her loving caregivers from Touching Hearts at Home. Their compassionate, gentle, and kind care brought joy and humor to the last years of her life. We also thank Suncrest Hospice for their help during her final days.
