Robert L. Haines passed away peacefully on July 12, 2014 in Lakewood, Colorado at the age of 97. Bob, as he was affectionately known, was born in Great Falls, Montana on January 18, 1917 to Martin and Lillian Haines. Bob was the younger brother to Charles, five years his senior. When Bob was 25 years old, he enlisted in the United States Army and served in World War II. He served with the 3rd Battalion, 19th Infantry, 24th Division. During his service, he earned the Good Conduct Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two bronze stars, and four Bronze Service Arrowheads. He was stationed in Australia, New Guinea, Hawaii, and The Philippines. Bob was stationed at Schofield Barracks in Honolulu and was one of the first units in after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Because of this, he was one of only three men who were made Honorary Members of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association chapter here Denver where he was an active member for many years. He participated in a variety of events including parades and speaking to high school and middle school students about his experiences in the war. He always enjoyed getting to the talk to kids about this amazing, important piece of history and wanted them to remember the sacrifices made by so many of his friends and others of this greatest generation. Throughout his life, Bob held a variety of jobs, including a jewelry engraver, working for the fire department at Rocky Flats, the Denver Public Library and Copy Vend. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling, playing cards with friends, and operating his CB radio. He was an avid fan of the Colorado Rockies and Denver Broncos. Bob is survived by his wife of 68 years, Betty; grandchildren Kelly Russell, Bobby (Jackie) Haines, Andy (Christine) Russell and Troy (Julie) Evans; great-grandchildren Ava and Halle Russell, and Ty, Tanner and Jocelyn Evans; daughter-in-law Joletta (Jim) Suchey. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother, his son Martin, daughters Patricia Haines and Barbara Russell, and son-in-law Mike Russell. He will be greatly missed by many other extended family members and friends. Services will be held on Friday, July 18th at 1:00pm, Horan and McConaty Family Chapel, 7577 W. 80th Ave., Arvada. Burial to follow at Crown Hill Cemetery, Wheat Ridge. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Denver Hospice or the Alzheimer's Association.
