Robert Harmel

Robert Michael Harmel (January 6, 1941 – February 21, 2022) – It is with deep sorrow that we share the news about the unexpected passing of Robert “Mike” Harmel at the age of 81.

Mike was born in Jonesboro, Arkansas, and spent most of his life in Colorado where he grew up in Denver/Lakewood. In his early 20s, he joined the Army as a way to see Europe, improve his German, and trace his family history. His time in Heilbronn was a fond memory, and he had hoped to one day return to Germany to enjoy its architecture, history, good food and beer. Upon returning to Colorado, Mike completed his studies in geophysics at the University of Colorado, Boulder, where he could build on his love of math and physics. He worked for the Bureau of Mines until his retirement.

In his free time, he continued his love of photography, reading historical non-fiction, listening to classical music, and connecting with his grandchildren during his Sunday evening phone calls. He loved being a grandfather and it brought him great joy to spend time with them at the zoo or the aquarium, and sharing his interest in photography and rocks with them.

Mike is survived by his son Eric Harmel, daughter Sandra Olauson (Kerry), his beloved grandchildren Mathias and Annika, sister Jane Massie (and family), as well as numerous relatives in the Harmel and Downey families.
