Robert Morris Huffman passed away on March 13, 2022, at University of Colorado Hospital.
Bob was born in Denver, Colorado on January 5, 1929, to Cecil Grace Huffman. His father Guy Morris Huffman passed away at Fitzsimons Hospital from tuberculosis just weeks before Bob was born. Bob had two older sisters – Pearl and Maud, who were teenagers when he was born. Bob grew up in the heart of Denver and always told great stories of his antics on 22nd and Emerson Street. He was even written about in the Denver Post as a seven-year-old boy when a prowler killed his dog who was protecting his family.
Bob served with the Colorado State Guard, joining at age 16. He claimed the higher ups didn’t find out his true age until he was over 17 years old. He was initially assigned to the 60TH HORSE CAV / MOTORCYCLE 25. The Guard had acquired Indian Motorcycles for the troops through the Army Surplus and they drilled to be scouts, even how to skid to a stop, laying the bike down and drawing their carbine from the scabbard. Many of his fellow troops had to scrounge or buy their own uniforms in the early days. Later after the State Army Guard was given federal status, Bob joined up with the Colorado Air National Guard (COANG), assigned to the Aircraft Armament Shop. He served faithfully with the COANG until he was nearly 60 years old and retired as Chief Master Sergeant, affectionately nicknamed ‘Chief Huffy’. He served on multiple federal activations with the United States Air Force; CUBAN CRISIS 51 61 \ DEC 10, 1950, VIETNAM 68 – 69, PANAMA, TURKEY, just to mention a few.
In his retirement years he liked to take road trips with his wife Elly and spend as much time as possible with his four grandchildren. Bob was also a prolific gardener, keeping his family, friends, and neighbors well stocked with tomatoes, peppers, and squash. He volunteered countless hours at Wings Over The Rockies building the room honoring the Colorado Air National Guard.
Bob is survived by his four children; Timothy (Dawn), Michael (Pippi), Sherri (Rob), and Steven (Rae Ann), and his four grandchildren; Tegan, Caitlin, Haley, and Guy. His wife Eleanor “Elly” proceeded him in death, passing on November 14, 2018.
