Robert Franklin Hume

Robert Franklin Hume, 84, Colonel (retired), United States Army, passed away peacefully on December 27, 2013. Robert or ""Bob"" as his friends and family know him was born in Enid, Oklahoma on January 19th, 1929 to David Shelton Hume and Fletta Irene (Colson) Hume. He was a loving husband of 51 years to Noma Lou (Butler) Hume, father of four sons, and ""Grandpa"" of 12 grandchildren. The Hume family previously lived in Enid, Oklahoma, various military posts in the US during Bob's military career, and finally in Aurora, Colorado where they moved upon his retirement from the military in 1981. Bob was proud of his ""Okie"" roots but grew to love his home in Colorado. Bob was a professional soldier, gentleman farmer, avid gardener, mechanic and ""jack of all trades."" He graduated from Oklahoma A&M (now Oklahoma State) in 1951 with a Bachelors Degree in Animal Husbandry and Agriculture. Bob joined the Oklahoma National Guard at age 17 and served as a Sergeant in the Headquarters Battery, 189th Field Artillery Battalion. He was commissioned a Lieutenant of Field Artillery in the Regular Army through the Oklahoma A&M Reserve Officer Training Corps program upon his graduation in 1951. Bob served his initial tour on active duty with the 45th and 7th Infantry Divisions, completing a combat tour in Korea during the Korean War. Upon his return to the states, Bob served as a Field Artillery Battery Commander at Fort Sill, Oklahoma before resigning his Regular Army commission to go back to Enid to support the Hume Motor Company and help his Dad work the family farms. He retained his commission in the Oklahoma National Guard until he went back on active duty in 1966. First, serving as Professor of Military Science at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma and then serving in the Department of the Army Headquarters in the Pentagon in Washington DC. Other military tours included service in the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and Readiness Region VIII Senior National Guard Advisor in Aurora, Colorado. Bob's last active duty posting was at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. There, he served as the Senior National Guard Advisor, Headquarters, Fifth US Army. His remarkable career included completing the US Army Field Artillery Basic and Advanced Courses, the US Army Command and General Staff College, and the US Army War College. Bob was a 35 year US Army veteran, climbing to the rank of Colonel - a remarkable man who lived a remarkable life. Bob is survived by his wife Noma Lou, brother David Ellsworth Hume, sister Marlene Hume Stewart, and four sons, Robert S. Hume, Richard A. Hume, Ryan C. Hume and John D. Hume. Bob's immediate family was with him when he passed. A Funeral Service for Bob will be held on Thursday, January 2, 2014 at 10:00 AM at Horan & McConaty Family Chapel, 5303 E. County Line Rd., in Centennial. Burial will follow at 12:15 PM at Fort Logan National Cemetery, Area C, Denver.
