Robert William Martin was born on November 22, 1925, to Mary Jane and Claude Martin in Julesburg, Colorado. At an early age, Bob and his family settled in Derby, Colorado, and the northern suburbs where he attended local schools. Bob was a proud WWII veteran having served in the U.S. Navy from February 5, 1943, until December 6, 1945. He saw service in Attu, Alaska and the South Pacific. On September 7, 1947, Bob married Connie Skaliotis, a childhood sweetheart, in Denver, Colorado. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last September. The Martins are long-time residents of Thornton moving here in February 1954. Bob retired from Lowry Air Force Base in June 1982 as a Publications Distribution Manager after thirty-four years of Federal service. He remained active in Thornton civic affairs having served as Councilman from his Ward and later as Civil Defense Director for the City. Prior to the incorporation of Thornton, he was one of the first volunteer police officers. He served as a member of the Home Rule Committee and Thornton Liquor Licensing Authority from its inception in January 1987 until the date of his death. He was a member of the Brighton Masonic Lodge No. 78, 32nd Degree Rose Croix Consistory No. 2, the El Jebel Shrine and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Until recently, Bob enjoyed years of bowling and visiting the casinos in Las Vegas and Black Hawk for entertainment. He also loved his Boxer dogs, cats, ice cream and chocolates. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Robert C., daughter in-law, Deborah Lynne, and grandson, Christopher, all of Thornton. Bob will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
