Robert P. McCarthy (92) passed away on May 25, 2015 surrounded by family. He was born in 1923 to Irish immigrants, Thomas McCarthy and Delia (Walsh) McCarthy in Rochester, NY during the Great Depression. Robert's life was heavily influenced by the Catholic Church, as he was raised for quite some time in an orphanage ran by Catholic Charities. However difficult his beginnings, Robert persevered. He graduated at the top of his class; served as a Navigator on B-26 airplanes in the European Theatre during WWII, and also served in the Air Force in the Korean War. Between wars Robert attended both Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the New Mexico School of Mines, earning degrees in Physics and Geophysics, which allowed him to work as a geophysicist for the United States Geological Survey in Golden, CO., where he retired in 1986. Robert met and married Barbara (Boone) McCarthy in 1961 and had five children; in 1972 Robert and Barbara and their children moved to Broomfield, Colorado, where Robert resided for the past 43 years. Robert is survived by his children: Robert II (Cynthia); Thomas (Holly); Bridgette (Jeffery); Patrick (Michelle); and John (Stephanie). Robert (known as Papa) especially enjoyed his eleven grandchildren, and his one great-grandchild; above all, they taught him about unconditional love. Robert's hobbies included abundant letter writing to many Catholic Church officials, tinkering around his house, and reading prolific, conservative-oriented literature related to the Catholic Church. As the ending of this chapter of Robert's life has come to a close, we know that a new chapter will bring beginnings; as Robert used to quote Lewis Carroll to his children when it was time for bed: ""The time has come the Walrus said to speak of many things, of horses and carriages, and of cabbages and kings."" Rest in peace, Papa. A rosary service will be held on Sunday, June 14, 2015 at Five O'Clock in the evening at Horan & McConaty family chapel at 9998 Grant Street, Thornton, Colorado. A funeral mass will be held the following day on June 15th, 2015 at ten o'clock in the evening. It will be held at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church, 900 W. Midway Blvd, Broomfield, Colorado.
