Robert G. Monson

February 28, 1920 — August 19, 2010

Robert Monson went home to be with his Lord on August 19, 2010, in Denver, Colorado. He was preceded in death by his much loved sister Jean (Hagen). Bob is survived by his sweetheart, Dee. They were inseparable for over sixty-seven years of marriage. He is also survived by his cherished daughters, Barbara Backlin (Mel), Bette Stokka (Keith), Joanne Garrison (Peter) and Janet Monson (Don Anderson); six grandchildren, Trevor, Kimberly, Eric (Jillian), Mia (Anthony), Reid and John; and one great grandchild, Kai. Bob was born on February 28, 1920, in Minneapolis. His ancestors were Scandinavian immigrants who helped establish Elim Baptist Church. As a boy, he spent summers swimming and fishing in Gideon's Bay on Lake Minnetonka. This started a life-long love for boats and fish. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, returning to Minneapolis to start a family and career in the grain industry. After obtaining his business degree from the University of Minnesota, he worked for thirty eight years at Bunge Corporation, as a treasurer and trader on the Grain Exchange floor. Bob put others first. Before and after retirement, he devoted much of his time to volunteer work; YMCA, Habitat for Humanity, Elim Church and Meals on Wheels. He loved using his hands to build things including play houses for his girls, a lake cabin and many, many jigsaw puzzles! His last four years were spent in Denver, where he received tender loving care from his eldest daughters and their dear husbands. Bob was a gentle spirit: kind, patient, slow to judge and quick to forgive. He is already missed by his family, but the loss is easier to bear with the assurance that he passed to a place where there is only joy, and no sorrow. A private family service will be held in Denver. Memorials are preferred to Elim Baptist Church, 685 13th Avenue NE, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55413, www.elimchurch.org; or to Habitat for Humanity, 3245 Eliot Street, Denver, Colorado 80211, www.habitat.org.
