Robert E. Wetzel

Robert Edward “Teddy” Wetzel passed away on August 5, 2017. Born December 20, 2001 at Rose Hospital in Denver, Colorado, to parents Scot Thomas Wetzel and Charlotte Remick Wetzel of Denver (1994-2012) and Evergreen (2012-present) Colorado. Teddy attended Graland Country Day School, Bergen Valley Intermediate School, and Evergreen Middle School, and was a rising sophomore at Evergreen Senior High School. A gifted and accomplished athlete in many sports, Teddy loved lacrosse and played the position of long stick midfielder (LSM) for Evergreen where he was named MVP. He also ran with the Evergreen Cross Country Team and raced on the Evergreen Ski Team. Skiing Colorado’s mountains was a favorite adventure for Teddy and he was recently selected to be an incoming member of the prestigious Copper Mountain Junior Ski Patrol. He was an accomplished water skier, wakeboarder, and sailor, having completed sailing school on the Rappahannock River and Chesapeake Bay where his maternal grandparents spend their summers. He enjoyed playing golf and swimming at Hiwan Golf Club in Evergreen and Skyline Acres in Denver, as well as mountain biking and long-boarding with his brothers and friends. Perhaps more than anything, Teddy loved to flyfish, tie flies, and spend time on the water pursuing many species of fish whenever, and wherever, possible. He was an amazing flycaster, and his skills landed him fish around the world of all types including bonefish in the British West Indies, striped bass in Nantucket, tiger rainbows on Alaska’s Kenai, and most of all, almost every species of trout in Colorado’s many lakes and rivers. Those who saw Teddy flyfish marveled at his fishing prowess and infectious enthusiasm. Teddy loved spending time with his two brothers Charlie and William, and he was frequently found in the streams, mountains, and forests of Colorado hunting, fishing, skiing, camping or exploring with them. They were inseparable, and enjoyed true “Three Musketeer” status together in all their adventures. Teddy’s charismatic way and magnetic personality, coupled with his quiet confidence, genuine smile, thoughtful, loving, and caring nature, and his truly gentle soul, drew everyone he met to him as a friend. We celebrate Teddy’s life and the marvelous enduring legacy he left in the short time he was with us as our loving son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, godson, friend, and teammate. Teddy was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Edward Timothy Remick II of Richmond, VA., and is survived by his parents Scot and Charlotte, brothers Thomas Charles Wetzel II and William Gwaltney Wetzel, maternal grandmother Katherine Gwaltney Remick of Richmond, VA., paternal great grandmother, Kay Wallace of Canton, Ohio, paternal grandparents Thomas Charles Wetzel and Marni Len Wetzel of Littleton, Colorado, Aunt Tamara Wetzel Stone (Todd P.Stone ) of Denver, Colorado, Aunt Kate Remick Kurtz (Patrick J. Kurtz) of Telluride, Colorado, Uncle Edward Timothy Remick III (Anne R. Remick) of Anchorage Alaska, and many cousins and extended family members. Teddy’s family invites friends to join them for a public celebration of his life at St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral at 1350 N. Washington Street, in Denver, Colorado on Friday, August 11, 2017 at 3:00PM, and to also to continue to celebrate Teddy following the service at the Denver Country Club. Friends are further invited to contribute pictures to the group link Remembering Teddy: www.flickr.com/groups/teddy. In memory of Teddy, they plan to install park benches around Evergreens many lakes, and to support Evergreen Senior High School’s ongoing effort to expand its athletic complex. They request that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to these causes in Teddy’s name, or to the Evergreen chapter of Trout Unlimited at www.evergreentrout.org, a favorite organization of which Teddy was a member, where donations will be used to establish a youth flyfishing program. The Wetzel Family is leading the effort to establish a new playing field at Evergreen High School to accommodate the growing athletic programs. The school has already secured the site for the playing field and plans are in place to install a new synthetic turf surface once the $1 million construction funding goal is achieved. The family has established the Teddy Wetzel Memorial Fund at USBank in Evergreen, CO and requests that in lieu of flowers, friends and family contribute to the playing field effort.
