Bob was born in Trinidad, Colorado on the Bowman Dairy founded by his aunt and uncle Harry and Mary (Mae) Bowman. He graduated from Trinidad High School and also attended the University of Colorado. He served in the US Army from 1946-1948 with the US Military Government in Japan and later with the US Army reserves in Intelligence from 1948 — 1957.
