Romaine Rouse

May 8, 1921 — March 28, 2013

Romaine Rouse, of Denver, Colorado, died serenely in her home on March 28, 2013 at the age of 91. Preceded in death by her loving husband, Philip A. Rouse. Romaine was a precious May baby from New Jersey. She met Philip in New York City and they married in 1948 at the Church of the Transfiguration (the Little Church Around the Corner) in Manhattan between Madison and Fifth Avenues. They moved to Denver shortly after where together they lived for 53 years. Known to many of her close and longtime friends as ""Ronnie,"" she was a volunteer at the Denver Art Museum. A Museum docent for much of her life, she especially enjoyed working with groups of young children, planting seeds of art appreciation and creativity. She was the recipient of several prestigious awards for her work in the Pre-Columbian discipline. Romaine boarded foreign exchange students and traveled the world with Philip, and with friends and family after his death. She impressed younger fellow travelers with her stamina developed by years of high mountain adventures. A day-hiker, Romaine knew well all the secret trails and destinations in the Indian Peaks Wilderness area. As a concert pianist, she loved music and great performances, supporting the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and other performing arts. Later in life she volunteered at the Newman Center for the Performing Arts, ushering many of us to our seats at Gates Concert Hall. She was a volunteer at the Emily Griffith Opportunity School in her early married life. Romaine participated in many creative activities. Painting, pottery, weaving, knitting, needlepoint, enameling and embroidery were a few. Those who received pottery from her kiln considered themselves lucky. Prior to meeting Philip, Romaine was a meteorologist with Eastern Airlines. Romaine is survived by three children, Jodie (Robert) Wiepking of Littleton, CO; Patti Vance of San Anselmo, CA; and Philip (Louise) Rouse, Jr. of Denver, CO; two grandchildren, Bradley (Rufina)Vance and Andrew Vance; and two greatgrandchildren, Visha and Kosmo. She was predeceased by her parents Chris and Laura Cassel; two brothers, Bob Cassel and Walt Cassel, and her son-in-law Jeff Vance. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials go to the Denver Art Museum, 100 W. 14th Ave Pkwy. Denver, CO 80204.
