Russell “Russ” Elmer Seeman, 75, passed away peacefully February 12, 2021 surrounded by his loving family. Russ was born January 9, 1946, in Jacksonville, Illinois to Harold Francis and Sophrona Ney Seeman.
Russ was taught to have a deep and abiding faith in Jesus Christ by his loving mother. He was the middle child, between an older sister (Kay) and a younger sister (Shirley). He was a loving brother, who may have occasionally teased his younger sister from time to time. He learned the value of hard work at an early age, tending to the family horses and working on the land that he grew up on in Illinois. Russ attended high school where he was quarterback of the varsity football team for 4 years. After graduation he attended BYU for 2 years, before serving a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in New York City, New York. After serving his mission, he enrolled back at BYU, where he later met the love of his life, Cheri Fielding, and they were married for time and eternity in the Manti Temple on October 16, 1970.
Russ enrolled with the Air Force ROTC during Vietnam and later joined the United States Air Force after graduating from BYU. He received his masters degree at BYU in Instructional Psychology. He joined the Air Force as a pilot, and as Vietnam ended, he was transitioned into different training and leadership capacities. He was eventually promoted to Lt Col. in the United States Air Force. Throughout this time in the Air Force, Russ and Cheri welcomed 6 children into their family. Throughout his service in the Air Force they lived in New York, Texas and Colorado. After 28 years of service in the United States Air Force, Russell honorably retired. After retiring, he worked in the private sector for several years as an Instructional Psychologist. His love of wood working led him to leave the private sector and become a self-employed carpenter.
Russell’s greatest accomplishments and joys were his loving marriage, raising his six children, and enjoying his grandchildren. He had an eternal perspective and knew that his family would be together forever. He served in various callings within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including bishop, traveling seventy, high council, and sunday school teacher, but his favorite callings were serving as a home teacher and a Denver Temple worker. After retirement, he served in the Denver Temple each week and it brought him great joy. Russ loved carpentry, listening to 50’s and 60’s music, playing sports with his children, reading the scriptures, 4-wheeling in the Colorado mountains, bargain shopping, daily walks, and cross-country car drives.
Russ is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Cheri Marie Fielding Seeman; 6 children, Russell Benjamin “Ben” (wife, Laura); Chalise Cheri Miller (husband, Travis); Jared Kelly (wife, Kim); Jon Fielding (wife, Alli); Randall Loren (wife, Andrea); and Ashlee Marie Jones (husband, Darren); 26 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and sisters Kay Givan (husband, Larry): Shirley Chapman (husband, Tom). Preceded in death by his parents Harold Francis Seeman and Sophrona Ney Seeman; a baby brother; mother-in-law and father-in-law Max and Marie Fielding.
