Ruth Marie Kalcevic was born on July 18, 1916 in Chadron, Nebraska to Charles and Eva (Blanchard) Whiting. She was reared in Chadron and graduated from high school there in 1934. As a young adult she moved to Colorado and was employed as a nurse's assistant and as a maid in private homes. She attended college and focused on drama classes. Ruth married Joseph Kalcevic on September 6, 1941. They made their home on a farm near Denver, CO for eighteen years. Following their divorce she acquired her cosmetology license and began operating her own salon at the age of 50. She moved to Washington in the latter 1970's where she graduated from a barber college at the age of 60. She was self employed as a barber and hairstylist for twenty-five years prior to her retirement. She moved to Minot in 2002 to be nearer her daughter and son-in-law Joanne and George Slanger and has been residing at Trinity Homes. Ruth was a member of the Catholic Faith, receiving her first communion in 2000. She was an avid gardener, excellent cook, and especially enjoyed listening to gospel and country music. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Ruth's loving family includes her children: Joanne (George) Slanger of Minot, Karen Baird and Joseph(Carrie) Kalcevic both of Byers, CO; nine grandchildren: Julie Saxton, Bob Hubbard, Dawn Dawkens, Debbie Noble, Jeremiah, Joey, Larry, and Sara Kalcevic and Charice Polk; nineteen great grandchildren; one great great-grandchild; sister: Helen Helman and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, brother: Henry, sister: Gertrude Partridge, daughter: Arlene and daughter-in-law: Rosa.
