S. Fred Bartz

November 28, 1947 — December 12, 2018

Our Fred died peacefully in his sleep on December 12, 2018 in Denver after a lengthy illness. He was surrounded by family in his final days. A Funeral Mass will be held in Fred’s honor on Thursday, May 30, 19, 1:30pm at St. Matthew Catholic Church (10703 Wurzbach Rd, San Antonio, Texas 78230) with a reception to follow in the Parish Hall.

Fred was born in San Antonio on November 28, 1947 to Oscar Bartz Jr. and Mary Lee (Poston) Bartz. He was the loving husband of Susan (Muir); proud dad of Christopher and Jennifer; granddad to Bradley; big brother to Annette Teter; uncle to Ben and Zac Muir, Tara Dankberg and Jenna Teter; brother-in-law to David Muir. Fred was a family man first, but also a hard-working CPA, avid golfer, active community volunteer, and loyal University of Texas fan, having attended 55+ years of UT football and baseball games!

After graduating from St. Louis University in 1969 with an accounting degree, Fred passed on claiming a ""sole surviving son"" exemption at the height of the Vietnam War and enlisted in the US Air Force Reserves. He served for eight years and earned the rank of captain. He spent his entire professional career — almost 40 years — at KPMG International in San Antonio, eventually managing the Tax Department and earning the nickname ""The Tax Guy."" Fred also was active in the San Antonio business and civic community serving on numerous boards in leadership positions, including the Texas Society of CPAs, Easter Seals, The Winston School, Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research, UT Health Science Center Advisory Council, San Antonio Estate Planners Council, and Oak Hills Country Club. He also was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church.

Words that come to mind when describing Fred include gentleman, kind, honest, loyal, service, humble, integrity, professional, loving and loved. He will be missed, but will remain in our hearts forever. Fred's family has donated his brain for medical research into preventing and curing neurological diseases. The family greatly appreciates the respectful and tender care he received the last three years of his life from Mary and Richard at Assured Assisted Living.
