S. Edward Portie
December 30, 1948 - Feb 27, 2019
Samuel Edward ""Eddie"" Portie was born December 30, 1948 in Beaumont, Jefferson County, TX and passed away on February 27, 2019 in Arvada, CO. He was surrounded by his loving family at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. He was a 1967 graduate of Vidor HS. He served a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the Southern States in 1968-1970. He attended Brigham Young University where he met his sweetheart Pamela Ann Fell. They moved to Vidor, TX before graduating so that he could follow in his father's footsteps and become a Pipefitter apprentice. He and his wife raised five children and had many adventures as his work had him traveling from TX to WA State, CA, AR, VA and everywhere in between. He finally settled in the Denver metro area in 1989 and subsequently ran his own business, Alpha P-5 Welding.
Ed was a Certified Welder for most of his life. He welded steel and stainless steel pipe and plate in all positions. He was an expert welder in arc-welding processes Stick, MIG, TIG and Flux-Core. He was a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) with the American Welding Society (AWS).
As Bechtel Power Company's welding engineer, he trained and tested hundreds of welders in Washington, Arkansas and California for new power plant construction and turn-arounds. He started and operated his own business as a self-employed welder in Denver, CO. For more than 20 years he was hired as an independent contractor, welding superintendent, welder and AWS-CWI. His business, Alpha P-5 Welding, contracted with the City and County of Denver for fabrication, erection and inspection of chilled water piping systems; light rail train stations, bridges and tracks. With his bulldozer and welding rig, he built many miles of 24"" water line and several fresh water reservoir dams.
By the grace of God, he operated a successful welding business. He was a reliable and proficient welder, which allowed him to make many friends, as well as be a good provider for his family and supporter of his church.
In 2014, Ed & Pam, served a two year service mission to the BYU Polynesian Cultural Center in Laie, Hawaii for the LDS church. Ed loved welding and his family. He was a Broncos fan and enjoyed a game this last fall with his grandkids before he got too sick. Ed never wanted to retire and could often be found in the summer evenings on his tractor baling hay. He loved working with the youth in his church and could often be found whistling a Merle Haggard song in his welding shop.
Survivors include his wife, Pamela Ann (Fell) Portie of Arvada; Children Aimee & Bryan Patterson (Clinton, MS), Jill & David Anderson (Broomfield), Benjamin & Christy Portie (Westminster), Katina & Nate Roberts (Japan) & Jon Portie (Denver); siblings, Muzette & Charlie B Alvis (Vidor, TX), Ilene & Byron Murray (Island Park, ID), Donna & Mike Simpson (Vidor, TX) & Winston Portie (Vidor, TX); thirteen grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
