Sarah Ann (Salley) (Noone) Petty, age 96, passed away peacefully at Western Hills Health Care Center, Lakewood, CO, on Tuesday, March 3, 2020.
She was born in Salina, KS, on September 13, 1923, to James B. Noone and Katherine M. (Foran) Noone. The family moved to Denver, CO, in the in the late 1930's, to escape the dust bowl. She attended Cathedral Grade and High School, graduating in 1941. While in school, Sarah took care of her Grandmother, Sarah Foran, and often wrote to movie stars, for pictures and autographs. In her spare time, when not attending movies, she would go down to Union Station and take pictures of movie stars when they changed trains in Denver. During WW II, she worked in travel, at both Lowry and Buckley Fields.
In the 1960's, Sarah owned and operated the Barnum Variety Store, for three years. She then was a retail clerk at Hesteds, Woolworths, and J.C. Penney's in both the JCRS and Villa Italia shopping centers.
She loved to travel, and some of her favorite places were Hawaii, Ireland, Las Vegas, and California. Mainly, she stayed home and tended to her many animals, while her daughter jetted around the world. She was often referred to as St. Francis of Newton St. She never met a stray she didn't like. Dishes of cat food and canned milk could be found on her porch, until all the cats were brought inside to eliminate the feral cat problem in the neighborhood. Many lived a long life, under her care.
Two of the things that she was known for was her great cooking and her direct prayer line to heaven. She was often asked to light a candle for someone's intention. Her only requirement was that the intention was something they were sure they wanted. She prayed for so many people on a regular basis that, at one point, she had cut down her list because she was falling asleep before she was finished.
In 2009, she moved to The Gardens of St. Elizabeth, along with her daughter. Her peripheral neuropathy progressed to the point that she had to move to Western Hills in 2014, and came under the care of Suncrest Hospice, in 2018.
She is preceded in death by her mother and father. Her only survivor is her best friend and only child Kathey Petty of Denver, CO.
The family (Kathey) would like to thank all of the staff, past and present, at The Gardens of St. Elizabeth; the Gardens' prayer group; Western Hills; and Suncrest Hospice.
A private graveside service, at Mount Olivet Cemetery, will be held, at a later date, when the pandemic has subsided.
Memorial contributions are welcome at St. Bernadette Catholic Parish Outreach, 7240 West 12th Avenue Lakewood, CO 80214 or any of the organizations mentioned above.
