Shawn lost his battle with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy on August 25, 2020 and died from heart complications due to this disease.
Shawn was a son and brother, a friend and ally, but above all else he was a warrior. He was put in a body that was too weak for his spirit and now his spirit is able to run free. Shawn was always good-natured and caring, even though he had a quick-witted devilish side to him. He gave the best hugs and had the biggest smile. Shawn made so many wonderful friends over the years and was cherished by his family members. There is not one day he will not be thought of by the people who loved him.
Shawn was born at Lutheran Medical Center on October 17, 1998 in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. Shawn spent 21 years living in Wheat Ridge with his family until a recent move to Grand Junction, Colorado. He graduated from Wheat Ridge High School in 2017 and attended Red Rocks Community College to become a history teacher. Shawn was always a history buff who loved World War I, World War II, and Vietnam War time periods. He could name dates off the top of his head, identify war planes and vehicles by a glance and knew almost every weapon used during those eras. Shawn enjoyed graphic design, gaming, music, board games and watching endless movies with family. He enjoyed going to sporting events, such as hockey, baseball and soccer, with friends and family. Shawn loved to go on road trips and be the navigator. He always loved to pick out the music for the long hours in the car. Shawn loved to travel and had a list of places he wanted to see. At 21, Shawn began to explore new breweries. His favorite brewery was New Terrain in Golden, Colorado. He planned to go to many more breweries in Grand Junction.
Shawn was very active in organizations that provided quality of life for other people with Muscular Dystrophy and varying disabilities. He was extremely proud of being on the Special Youth Challenges (SYC) board. He also had two service animals he loved through Canine Companion for Independence, Eli and Melissa.
Even though there are so many more things to share, nothing compares to who you were and the light you gave to us, Shawn. You were a truly wonderful person and the world has gotten a little smaller without you. Until we meet again, Shawn.
“I’m a warrior. I have courage. I have honor. I have strength. I have wisdom. I have respect.
I’m fearless.”
