Sherwin Michael ""Mike"" Carlson

November 23, 1939 — February 14, 2020

Sherwin Michael ""Mike"" Carlson was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on November 23, 1939 to Sherwin Hugo Carlson and Anna Bernice Miller. He was the first of six children.

He met his sweetheart, LouAnne Homer, at Roosevelt Junior High when he was twelve and she was eleven. They were sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on June 13, 1960. Together they had three children: Steven Scott, Robert Stanley, and Amy Dawn.

As a teenager, Mike enjoyed playing football at East High School in Salt Lake City. After graduating, he went to the University of Utah where he earned a Bachelor's degree in civil engineering. He also did some post-graduate work at the University of Colorado. While still in college, Mike joined the Army Reserve and served in the military for seven years, achieving the rank of Sergeant First Class by the time he was discharged. He had a long and distinguished career with Mountain Bell/US West that took him and his family to live in various locations including Utah, Illinois, Colorado, Arizona and Washington State.

He was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings. He particularly loved being a primary teacher and a scoutmaster. He also loved serving in the Denver Temple, going on a mission to Nauvoo, Illinois with LouAnne, and serving multiple missions at the Denver Storehouse and Cannery.

Along with his service in the church, Mike loved to serve in the community. He served on multiple home owner's boards, was an active participant in the Jaycee's organization in Utah and the Kiwanis club in Colorado, donated time and money to the United Way, and drove for Meals on Wheels. When he wasn't serving, he loved to hunt, fish, tie flies, play spider-solitaire, mow his lawn, wash his cars, read Clive Cussler novels, and make beautiful stained-glass pieces.

Mike is survived by his spouse LouAnne, his son Robert, his daughter Amy, his brother Jon, his sisters Judy and Janice, and six grandchildren. Mike was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Steve, his sister Nancy, and his son Steven.
