Sherwood Peter Jensen, former Ft. Morgan resident, died on December 24, 2023, at his home in Broomfield, CO. He was born on March 18, 1928, to Karen Margrethe Jensen and Christian Marinus Jensen in Rodney, IA. After his 1945 graduation from Smithland High School, where he played basketball, he worked at a local filling station and then a hardware store. In 1950, he married Marion Siebert, and they had two children, Stan and Karen. The family moved to Emerson, NE, in 1959, where Sherwood owned and managed the Jensen Lumber Company.
In 1962, the family moved to Ft. Morgan, CO, where Sherwood, who was known to most friends as Pete, was employed first as assistant manager and later as manager of the Mead Lumber Company. He was well known in the community and highly regarded by contractors and skilled tradesmen engaged in the building industry throughout Morgan County. He retired from the company in 1979 but remained in the building supply industry by becoming a salesman for Kaibab Industries from 1979 until 1990, serving customers in Colorado, Nebraska, and Kansas. Later he was employed as an outside salesman in Colorado, Wyoming, and Nebraska for Valley Steel and Wire.
Beyond his interest and expertise in building, Sherwood loved his family and took great interest in the activities of his children. He also participated in civic and church organizations. He was an avid outdoorsman with a love of the Colorado mountains and prairies. Up until age 79, he hunted wild game and fowl with Stan. He was a sports fan and loyal to his favorite professional baseball and football teams for many decades. Throughout his life, he enjoyed music of all types, but especially big band music, patriotic music, and classic hymns. He had musical talent and taught himself to play the organ, trombone, clarinet, drums, and even the marimba. He was an accomplished trumpeter and played “Taps” at many Memorial Day ceremonies and military funerals in Iowa between 1945 and 1958.
Sherwood and his wife lived in Virginia for five years to be near their grandchildren and returned to Colorado in 2006.
He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Marion Jensen; a son, Stanley (Phyllis) Jensen of Thornton, CO; a daughter, Karen (Paul-Noel) Chretien; three grandchildren, Spencer Chretien, Claire (Andrew) Guernsey, and Stephen Chretien; and two great-grandchildren, Michael Guernsey and Gabriel Guernsey.
