Shirley J. Shelton born October 7, 1930 died peacefully April 14, 2012 at the age of 81. She was surrounded by her family and dear friends. A celebration of her beautiful life and Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, April 18, 2012 and April, 19, 2012. Shirley was born October 7, 1930 in Denver, Colorado to John C. and Minnie McMullen the youngest of four children. Both of her parents were originally from Illinois relocating to Denver in the early 1900's for health reasons. Her father was a small grocery business owner in Denver and was also a union organizer. Shirley grew up in what is now known as lower down town on Blake Street. She attended Cole Jr. High school and graduated from Manuel High school. In February of 1952 Shirley married her first love Harry Haley Shelton and led the life of a military wife traveling throughout the U.S. until Mr. Shelton's retirement and return to Denver in 1969. This union produced a son and daughter. In November of 2003 Shirley was to meet her second love Melvin Vinning. This relationship produced nine years of a loving and abiding union. Shirley raised two children but was mother to many more. She is survived by her loving partner Melvin Vining. Son Steven Shelton, Daughter Terry Shelton Shumaker, nephew Mikel McMullen, Grandson Matthew Shelton and granddaughter Hannah Shelton and Robin Shelton and many loving friends. Contributions may be made in Shirley's name to the Denver Rescue Mission, 3501 East 46th Avenue Denver 80216. Visitation Wednesday, April 18, 2012, 4:00PM - 6:00PM concluding with the Rosary and sharing of memories at 6PM, Horan & McConaty Family Chapel, 3020 Federal Boulevard Funeral Mass Thursday 12:00PM, Holy Family Catholic Church, 4380 Utica Street, Interment Fort Logan National Cemetery.
