Simon J. Prowse

December 7, 1931 — February 27, 2023

Simon was born on December 7, 1931, in Jeddo, in a coal-mining region in Pennsylvania.  He is preceded in death by his brother, Aloysius, his sister, Dorothy and a nephew, Edward.  He is survived by his wife, Sylvia, his nephew, Daren and nieces Simmone and Andrea.

He graduated from high school in Freeland, Pennsylvania, in 1949.  He was employed by Johns-Manville Corporation, in Manville, New Jersey, directly after high school.

On Simon’s 21st birthday, Ike Eisenhower invited him to join the United States Army.  He joined in January 1953, as the Korean War (1950-1953) was ending.  He volunteered for paratrooper duty, graduated from the Basic Airborne School, Fort Benning, Georgia, and served as a member and jumpmaster in the 503rd Infantry “Rock” Regiment of the 11th Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky, attaining the rank of Sergeant.  While in the Army, he also played as a starring member of his regimental basketball team.  He was honorably discharged from the Army in January 1955.

Simon returned to his job at Johns-Manville immediately after his discharge from the Army.

He met Sylvia in 1956, while both were attending Drake College in New Brunswick, New Jersey.  They were married in 1958 and celebrated their 65th anniversary in February of this year,  During their early years, they resided in Manville, White House Station, and Flemington, New Jersey and in Dalton, Georgia.  In 1973, they relocated to Denver, Colorado, to the Johns-Manville General Headquarters.  Simon was inducted into the J-M Quarter Century Club in 1975.

In 1968, he received the Degree of Bachelor of Science in Management from Rutgers University, and in 1979, he received a Master of Business Administration from the University of Denver.

Simon retired from Johns-Manville in 1981,  joining Anderson Clayton as the Western Regional Director.

In 1983, he purchased Denver Glass Equipment, Ltd., a manufacturer of glass machinery designed for glass artisans.  He sold the business in 1993 and entered retirement.

Since selling Denver Glass,  his favorite pastimes were playing golf, enjoying the camaraderie of his golf mates, working out and swimming at the YMCA, investing in the stock markets, exploring on his computer, a little traveling, fishing, going on picnics, or just sitting out in the sun and soaking it in.  One of Simon’s most special, fun  achievements  was scoring a Hole-in-One on the 6th hole of the Homestead Golf Course in Lakewood, Colorado, on July 5, 2007.

Simon passed away, at the age of ninety-one, Sylvia at his bedside, in the early evening hours of February 27, 2023, at Someren Glen Senior Living Community.
