SISTER ROBERTA FUREY, SCL . . . Sister Roberta Furey, 82, a Sister of Charity of Leavenworth (SCL) for almost 65 years, died on May 28, 2018 at Presbyterian/St. Lukeâs Medical Center, Denver. Sister Roberta dedicated 48 years of her ministry to children and youth at Mount Saint Vincent, an orphanage that transitioned to a residential and day treatment center. Roberta was born May 6, 1936 in Kansas City, Mo., the second youngest of seven children of Norris and Mabel Seiberling Furey. She graduated from Bishop Hogan High School, Kansas City, Mo., and entered the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth in August 1953. She professed vows as Sister Mary Gerald on Aug. 22, 1955. She later returned to her baptismal name. Except for brief times of service as an elementary teacher, a nurse assistant and a purchasing agent for the SCL Community, Sister Roberta cared for youth at St. Joseph Home, Helena, Mont., and Mount Saint Vincent. Denver became her home, the Broncos her team, and the children of Mount Saint Vincent the recipients of her love and care. As a child care worker, she taught them life skills. She kept in contact with many of the youth and staff through the years. Co-workers and friends describe her as joyful, very generous, fun-loving and âone of a kind,â propelled by the love of God and love of people - especially the children at Mount Saint Vincent whom she greeted to begin each day. In 2017, for her unwavering devotion, Sister Roberta received the Saint Vincent Award presented by the facility. Preceding Sister Roberta in death were her parents; her sisters Sister Jane Ellen Furey, SCL, Betty Lutz and Martha Stoerman; and her brothers Michael and Joseph Furey. Survivors include her sister Norrine Baggett (Frank), Shreveport, La.; her sisters-in-law Judy Furey, Kansas City, Mo., and Faye Comeaux, Houston, Texas; nieces and nephews; and the SCL Community. There will be a visitation from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, June 1 at Mount Saint Vincent with a vigil service at 7 p.m. On Saturday, June 2, greeting will begin at 9:30 a.m., and the Memorial Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, Arvada, Colo. Burial will follow in Leavenworth, Kan. Memorial contributions can be made to Mount Saint Vincent, 4159 Lowell Blvd., Denver, CO 80211, or the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, 4200 S. 4th St., Leavenworth, KS 66048.
