Sophia was born to Valsamis Scott and Elisavet Hatzoglou Scott on April 5th, 1920. She grew and lived in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, with her older brother Jimmy and older sisters, Mary, Frances and Angie. As the youngest of the family, she was always loved and in turn was very devoted to her Pennsylvania nieces and nephews, Rena, all three of the Bettys, Gregory, Harry, Kathy, Anne, and Liz. Sophia attended Aliquippa High School and attended business schools in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and later in Gary, Indiana. She married Thomas Mehos after World War II in 1946 and moved to Gary, Indiana, where she was surrounded by both the Mehos and Anastopoulos families. Her Scott family in Pennsylvania and New York were always close to her heart. She and Thomas were blessed with three children, Louis, Ahna and Valerie. Sophia was always dedicated to her family, above anything else. Sophia worked as a secretary at JM Foster Construction Company. She was a charter member of the Optimisses Club, a subsidiary of the Optimist Club, providing for local girls in the community. Sophia loved the Greek Orthodox religion and was involved with the Philoptohos club of the Greek Orthodox Churches of Gary, Merrillville, and Denver. Since cooking was her passion, she created Greek cookbooks with the ladies of the church. Sophia also created church directories to provide for the parishioners. One of Mom's favorite stories happened during prohibition. Yiayia Scott used to make liquor in the bathtub of their apartment. She would place a couple of bottles in the bottom of a basket and cover them with loaves of bread. Then Mom would set off delivering the baskets to people in the community! She was the most wonderful yiayia to Andy, Beth, Alex, Kathryn, Greg and Ali. She planned countless activities for her grandchildren. Her love for her children and grandchildren was boundless and she will always be remembered as being cheerful, happy and smiling. New Years Eve parties were her specialty, providing a tableful of tasty treats along with party hats, streamers and horns to blow at midnight, Later in life, she was blessed with great-grandchildren Nathan, Benjamin, Richie and Leah. With a twinkle in her eye, she most recently decided that it may be too much to babysit for the great-grandchildren! Please share memories and condolences with the family in the guestbook below.
