Stephanie M. Benton

Stephanie Marie (nee Jakimowitz) Benton was born in New York City on January 15, 1922, and died November 28, 2010. Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, teacher, and friend. She received her Ph.D. in classical languages and literature from Cornell University. After a year at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, she taught for many years at Colorado College and the University of Denver. Survivors include her husband, Ed Benton; her daughters and sons-in-law, Margrit Benton and Mark Nelson (Singapore) and Mary Benton and Douglas Barnes (Lima, Peru); her grandchildren, Zachary and Emily Nelson and Malcolm Barnes; her brother, Joseph Jackson; and many nieces and nephews. A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, December 29, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 2626 East 7th Avenue Parkway. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution in her memory to The Samaritan House in Denver or to The Denver Botanic Gardens.
