Stephen Bates Perkins, aged 52 and residing in Denver, CO, passed away on August 10th, 2022, in a hit and run incident while cycling.
Steve was born on March 16, 1970, to Max and Caroline Perkins in Houston, TX six minutes after his twin brother, Dan. Steve graduated from Plano East Senior High School in Plano, TX, where he played basketball. He then played basketball at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri, where he majored in Mathematics and was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. After graduating, Steve obtained a second bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, and then a law degree from the University of Houston.
After law school, Steve moved to Dallas, TX, where he met Laura Muriby through a mutual friend. At the age of 29, Steve married Laura, and in 2004 they moved to Denver, CO, where they had twin boys, Will and Alex, who are now 15 years old. Professionally, Steve worked for Medtronic in Boulder, CO, as a patent attorney for the last 15 years.
Besides being an excellent lawyer and a devoted husband and father, Steve enjoyed myriad activities and successes in his life. He was an active bicyclist and former triathlete completing 3 IronMan Triathlons. He loved electronics and gadgets, was an expert at 6 Degrees of Separation from Kevin Bacon, ran a 4:59 mile in 8th grade which is still a record at Carpenter Middle School, and had a deep calling to the Rocky Mountains.
Before the crash, Steve was having a wonderful summer. After a long hiatus, he had rediscovered the joy of cycling and had worked his way into excellent fitness. He was also overjoyed that his son, Will, had recently expressed interest in taking up the sport. He and Alex shared a love of heavy metal music, and Steve often loved listening to Alex learn to play some of their favorite riffs on his guitar.
He and Laura and the boys had already traveled extensively, and were making plans for additional excursions, both in state and out.
Steve died doing the activity that brought him the most joy, riding his bike. He had completed a ride with his twin brother and best friend, Dan, and was headed home to the people he loved most.
Steve is survived by his wife, Laura; his two sons, Will and Alex; his parents, Max and Caroline Perkins of Austin, TX; his siblings, Courtney Johnson of Centreville VA, Dan Perkins of Littleton, CO, and John Perkins of Austin, TX; and many in- laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
