Steven J. Mascarenas was born April 3, 1959, in Denver, CO. He was adopted into the loving arms of Stella and Thomas Mascarenas Jr. at just 3 months old. He was raised alongside his younger brother Robert in Westminster, CO in the same home his mother still lives in. He often shared fond memories of running around their Shaw Heights neighborhood with close friends until the streetlights came on.
He graduated from Westminster High School in 1977. He then attended Fort Lewis College in Durango, CO, where he met his future wife, Kathy. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1981. He was accepted into Oklahoma City University School of Law and later transferred to University of Denver School of Law, where he obtained his law degree in 1985. He passed the Bar Exam on his first attempt in 1986 and became a licensed attorney. He began his career out as a prosecutor for the City of Aurora. Steve and Kathy welcomed their first daughter into the world in November 1987. In 1989, he started the independent Law Firm of Steven J. Mascarenas. Their second daughter was born in May 1992. A few years later he developed an interest in real estate. While simultaneously running his law business and raising a family, Steve obtained his real estate license and started Mascarenas Real Estate, among many other business ventures.
Steve enjoyed attending CU Buff games and watching college football, the Denver Broncos and Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche and Rockies. He liked playing fantasy football, fishing with his grandkids, and going golfing with his dad and brother. Lots of quality time was spent relaxing in the family’s mountain condos in Keystone and on the beach in Hollywood, FL. His most recent interests were meteorology, politics, church, and coin collecting. He loved every moment spent with his family, especially his grandkids.
Steve passed away March 3, 2023, in Aurora, CO. He is survived by Kathy Mascarenas, daughters Jackie (Cisco) Roacho and Julie (Corey) Stegner, grandchildren Iliana and Niko Roacho, mother Stella Mascarenas, brother Robert (Cathy) Mascarenas, numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends.
