Steven Dale Zaugg

September 16, 1955 — April 21, 2013

Steven Dale Zaugg, 57, passed away April 21, 2013. He was born September 16, 1955 in La Grande, Oregon to Waldo and Phyllis Droke Zaugg. A dedicated fisherman as a young man, Steve spent many hours patiently waiting for that trophy fish to grab hold of his hook. He was also a skilled wrestler in High School, a member of the Chess Team, and was very dedicated to his studies. He met and married Diane Lucas on June 25, 1983. After graduating from Brigham Young University with a Ph.D in analytical chemistry, they moved to the Denver area where he worked for the US Geological Survey developing methods to detect contaminants in water, soils, and other materials. The methods he developed are used widely in many laboratories. Steve was kind and thoughtful to all he came in contact with, and was highly regarded by all who knew him. He dedicated much time to teaching chess to elementary students in the Denver area and passed on his love of the game to his posterity. Steve is survived by his wife, Diane Lucas Zaugg; three sons, Aaron (wife, Mariajose) Zaugg, Adam Zaugg and Andrew Zaugg; parents, Waldo and Phyllis Zaugg; siblings, Linda (Gary) Rathgeber, Debbie (Jerry) Lewis, Craig (Dawn) Zaugg, and many other loving extended family members and friends. A viewing will be held on Friday, April 26, 2013, from 9:00am-9:45am, with the Funeral Service beginning at 10:00am, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 13206 West Green Mtn. Drive, Lakewood, Colorado 80228. Burial will follow at the Golden City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to the Ensight Skills Center at http://ensightskills.org/how-you-can-help/.
