Sue Scofield

April 16, 1937 — February 10, 2019

Sue Scofield, age 81, originally of Evanston, Illinois, departed this life surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, February 10th at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Mishawaka, IN. She was born in St. Louis, MO, and after spending some time in an orphanage due to her mother's illness, she was adopted by Lucille and Bruce Parkhill, in Evanston, IL, with her late sister, Nancy. She grew up in a very artistic family: her father played the organ, her mother was an exceptional violinist, her uncle was an artist of some repute, and they were friends with the noted classical guitarist, Andres Segovia. She attended art school in Evanston and loved taking the ""L"" to the Art Institute of Chicago to linger among the collections there. After withdrawing early from college due to family circumstances, she moved out West to Colorado where she fell in love with the mountains and her future husband, the late Lorne ""Buzz"" Scofield, while on a hiking trip. They married on June 9th, 1961.

While her life was dedicated to her faith, her family, art, music, the outdoors and food, Sue's biggest interest was in people. Throughout her life, her activities centered on helping and informing others. She worked on political campaigns, including the gubernatorial race for Ronald Reagan in California; after converting to Christianity, she visited the sick and homebound regularly, including various hospital ministries; she founded and ran the Trinitarian, a newspaper for the Anglican Catholic Church, travelling all over the world to cover stories from India, Australia, England, and Guatemala. With her late husband, she joined the Third Order Franciscans as an Anglican, following the rigorous spiritual life which it entailed throughout the rest of her life. After converting to Catholicism in the mid-nineties, Sue continued spreading her love of music and learning by organizing the Morningstar Troubadours, a homeschool ministry which performed at retirement homes in Denver. In addition, she founded the Denver Chesterton Society and helped organize the donation of the entire corpus of Chesterton's work to Wyoming Catholic College. After her husband passed in 2013, Sue lived with family in Littleton, CO, Portland, OR, and South Bend, IN, where she continued to devote herself to others through her prayers, sharing her love of books, Scrabble, and watching educational videos with her fellow residents at Schubert Villa. She loved her faith and evangelized all she met. Through her love, presence, and prayers, Sue adored and supported her grandchildren in their many artistic endeavors: music, theatre, dance, art and writing. In the end, Sue modeled her life after the monastic ""love of learning and the desire for God"".

Sue was survived by her four children, their spouses, and grandchildren: Randy and Rosina Scofield, of Vancouver, WA and their children: Nicole, Sebastian and his wife, Christina, Hannah, Alyssa, Dominic, Ana-Sophia, Elizabeth, and Javier; Dave and Suzette Scofield and their daughter Sophia; Debby and Michael Hathaway and their children: Mary, Abigail, Amanda, and Justin; John and Pamela Scofield and their children: Emma, Juliana, Christa, and Jude. She will be sorely missed by all. As the red priest wrote: Nulla in mundo pax sincera sine felle; pura et vera, dulcis Jesu est in te. ""There is no true peace in this world without bitterness; pure and true it is in You, sweet Jesus.""

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Sue’s name to Carmelite Monastery, 6138 S. Gallup St., Littleton, CO US 80120 or Abbey of St. Walburga, 1029 Benedictine Way, Virginia Dale, CO 80536.

Requiescat in te, Jesu.
