Tommie Ann Durkin

November 11, 1948 — April 20, 2012

Tommie Ann (Kennedy) Durkin, 63, of Lakewood, Colorado passed away on April 20, 2012. Tommie Ann Kennedy Durkin was born to Jim and Mary Kennedy in McPherson, Kansas on November 11th, 1948. The family moved around the Kansas/Oklahoma area for the first few years until they settled on the front range of the Rocky Mountains in the late 1950's. Her early schooling was in the Loveland area and she later attended Denver's South High School. She also took several classes at Red Rocks Community College and the Metropolitan State College of Denver. Following her education, she progressed to a successful career in sales, working as a Realtor in Denver and a traveling sales representative for a clothing company. In the late 1990's she began an independent scissor sharpening business, Super Sharp, which she operated efficiently until health concerns forced her to retire in 2009. She met her husband George Michael Durkin in 1983. Early dates included a Willie Nelson concert at Red Rocks Amphitheater and John Elway's first appearance with the Denver Broncos at Mile High Stadium. A major component of her nature that caused her to be so successful in her life and career was her amazing ability to empathize with, relate to and care about everyone she met. She was never over-impressed by status and treated all she encountered with dignity and respect. She was highly involved in national and local politics. She took her civic duty very seriously and enjoyed getting others involved and enthusiastic about causes and elections. She was active with local charitable organizations, including Catholic Charities and the Jefferson County Action Center. She was a loving mother to her two children, Mollie Carolyn Durkin, born 1986 and Edward Michael Durkin, born 1990. Throughout her children's school years she was an active participant in the Parent Teacher Association and a tireless supporter of all her children's endeavors. She enjoyed her life and the lives of those around her. Her legacy will live on in the kind and gentle spirit she nurtured and shared with all those fortunate enough to know her. Funeral Mass will be Saturday, April 28, 2012, 10:30am at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church, 1060 Saint Francis Way, Denver, Colorado 80204. There will be a gathering at the family home from 2:00-5:00. Please share your memories of Tommie and condolences with her family by selecting the ""Sign Guestbook"" link.
