In loving memory, of Tyler James Smith, most beloved son, husband, father, brother, uncle, nephew, and friend who passed away on January 3, 2020 after a 5 ½ year battle with brain cancer. Tyler was born on April 12, 1982 in Denver, Colorado. He was the third son of Steven L. and Marilyn B. Smith of Centennial, CO.
Tyler grew up in Aurora loving life and seeing each new day as an adventure. After graduating from Grandview High School in 2001, he went on to serve a two year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in New York City Spanish-speaking mission. Upon returning he went to Mesa State College and then finished his bachelor's degree at Metro State majoring in Psychology.
Tyler married his eternal companion he had been friends with since middle school, Rachel Turnbow on 11-11- 2006 in the LDS Denver Temple. Rachel was the love and beauty of his life. Like Jacob in the Bible, this was a fulfillment of a seven year quest from when he first recorded in his journal that he wanted to marry Rachel. They have three wonderful children, Kittridge James (11), Kieden Ryler (8) and Seedlyn Marae (6). His joy and purpose in living was to serve and love his family.
Although he had several jobs, his most recent and longest-term job was at Arapahoe/Douglas Works! Workforce Center since 2009 as an employment specialist. He loved his coworkers and was passionate about helping people improve their lives. He also worked with inmates believing no one should lose hope no matter their station in life.
Tyler is deeply loved and will be greatly missed by those who knew him. His infectious smile and laugh, sincerity and sense of humor made him a favorite wherever he went. He loved playing the guitar, singing, dancing, softball, anything with nature, and any activity with people. He had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. Children flocked to him knowing he truly cared for them. Tyler always tried to follow the teachings of the Savior and his Heavenly Father and did not want to disappoint Them or any of his loved ones. His mission in life was service and charity and he did not fail, even through his most challenging trials.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents and two uncles. He is survived by his wife and three children; his parents; brothers: Nathan Smith (Wendy), Parker, CO; Bobby Smith (Meredith), Syracuse, UT; Corey Smith, Parker, CO; Parents-in-law: Wayne and Marilyn Turnbow, Centennial, CO; Brother-in-law: Blaine Turnbow (Erica), Centennial, CO; Sisters-in-law: Joy Frandsen (Jason), Price, UT; Karen Hoffman (Stuart), Layton, UT; 5 nieces and 7 nephews who adore him.
