Vaughn F. Spencer

Vaughn Spencer, 71, lost his valiant and brave battle with cancer on February 25, 2017. The second of eight children, Vaughn was born in Anthony, KS to Vaughn E and Loretta Traffas-Spencer. He grew up in Sharon, KS, home of Martina McBride, where he was known for using his siblings as target practice, racing cars, tipping over outhouses and lighting the family chicken coop on fire; in which he always proclaimed his innocence. Vaughn attended Pratt Junior College and enlisted in the Navy in 1967. He served on the aircraft carrier Ticonderoga in Vietnam and the Hornet for the Apollo 12 pick-up. He worked for 34 years with Amoco Production Company (Later BP Production Co.) as a Process Safety Manager and retired in 2009. He was an accomplished wood-worker, but his true loves in life were his grandchildren and bacon. He is survived by his wife of 44 years Nancy Serra-Spencer; his daughter Erica Letcher (Daniel); granddaughter Ava and grandson Mason. Sharing the loss of their brother are Marcia Dodson of Tucson, AZ; Barbara Oller of Emporia, KS; Mark Spencer (Donna) of Houston, TX; Lori Spencer of Owasso, OK; George Spencer (Mary) of Manhattan, KS and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Vaughn and Loretta (Traffas) Spencer; sister, Susan Spencer; brother, Louis Spencer; brother-in-law, Wendell Dodson; and brother-in-law Joe Oller. Visitation and rosary will be held Thursday, March 2, 2017, 5:40 pm at Horan & McConaty Funeral Home (9998 Grant Street, Thornton, CO 80229). Family and friends are invited to remember and celebrate his life at a funeral mass at 10:30 am on March 3, 2017 at St Augustine Catholic Church (178 S 6th Ave, Brighton, CO 80601; phone: 303.659.1410).
